ISS Mock Trial Team Named Best in State

Members of the ISS Mock Trial Team that claimed third in August at the 2015 YMCA National Judicial Competition will advance to nationals again in 2016 after being named the No. 1 defense team and best overall team in the state at the 2015 Alabama YMCA Youth Judicial Program!

A panel of attorneys and judges named Davis Tyler-Dudley ’17, Taylor Hinch ’17, Max Klapow ’17, Liz Jones ’18, Marc Straus ’16, and Chandler Pulliam ’17 overall state champions after the team won the verdict in the final trial of the statewide competition, which concluded Monday in Montgomery. The teammates—one of four ISS teams that ranked in the top 20 at the state competition—will compete in the 2016 YMCA National Judicial Competition next summer in Chicago.

The defense team of Daler Karassayev ’17, Bin Cho ’18, Ashton Tyler-Dudley ’17, Cher Hu ’18, Kendall Owens ’19, and Dewey Wilbanks ’17 placed seventh in the state. The prosecution team of Henry Giattina ’17, Amy Li ’18, Christian Owens ’17, Deven Patel ’18, Rebecca Schmieder ’17, and Varun Yerramsetti ’17 placed 15th. The prosecution team of Matthew Lash, Bennett Atkins '18, Zak Heino '17, Ulysses Keevan-Lynch '17, Bela Patel '18, Thomas Rooney '17, Peter Scalise '18, and Emma Storm '19 ranked 17th in the state.

Also competing on ISS teams were Dylan Le ’20, William Grumley ’18, Isaac Zhou ’17, Molly Webb ’19, Matyas Jakubu ’17, Jennifer Feng ’18, Ken Jiao ’18, and Devin Patel '20.

Mock Trial Team faculty adviser D’Anthony Allen saluted all students for their hard work and thanked ISS parent volunteer coaches Carole Mazer and Dylan Black for their help in preparing the teams to compete and ISS parent Karen Hinch for chaperoning the competition.

“I’m so proud of our students’ hard work and dedication,” says Allen. “Not only did they score high; they also represented the school with excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie. Our students train by meeting several hours each week after school as part of Indian Springs’ Mock Trial Club, and they are competing against teams that meet every day as a class. What an incredible honor to have three teams ranked in the top 15 and one named the No. 1 defense team and best overall team in the state!”

Congratulations to all!
