Wang '20 Wins Scholastic Regional Writing Award

Student Spotlight
Springs sophomore Emma Wang ’20 has been awarded a Silver Key distinction in the Personal Essay & Memoir category of the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards through the Southeast Writing Region-at-Large, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists.

Her winning essay, “Holding Up the Sky,” is a self-reflection on tension in family relationships.

A boarding student from China, Wang counts herself “extremely lucky” to have mentors like Indian Springs English teacher Cal Woodruff (who helped her edit the essay last fall) that encourage her to practice writing.

With their guidance, she is also currently working on her first novel. She enjoys writing narratives that help her sort through thoughts and emotions, as well as develop her creative identity and individual voice.

“When I’m writing, I find out things about myself that I never knew,” she says.

Like many at Springs, she is also encouraged by the writings of alum author John Green ‘95.

“My biggest dream would be to walk into Barnes & Noble and see my book on the shelves,” says Wang. “I hope that one day someone will stumble upon my writing and it will inspire them as so many books have inspired me.”

Congratulations on your accomplishment, Emma!
