Kim '19 To Attend the 49th New York String Orchestra Seminar

Student Spotlight
After making her debut at Carnegie Hall earlier this year, Springs violinist Honney Kim '19 will once again take the stage as one of the youngest players in the 49th New York String Orchestra Seminar.

Kim, a junior, will spend 10 days in New York City in late December playing under the direction of some of the world’s best ensemble instructors. On the evenings of Dec. 24 and 28, she will perform alongside 18 wind and brass players and 44 other string players, ages 16 to 23, in concerts presented by Carnegie Hall. Every player received a scholarship for the full cost of the seminar, totaling $3,750 in value.

More than 300 players auditioned to participate in the seminar. As part of the competitive audition process, Kim submitted a recorded performance and traveled in early November to New York City to present a live, eight-minute audition.

Over the past few years, Kim’s skill, musicality, commitment to the violin have earned her prizes in both national and international competitions, solo performances with some of the South’s most prestigious orchestras, and most recently a three-week residency and a two-week tour of Latin America as part of the 2017 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

The New York String Orchestra Seminar has offered professional training to gifted young musicians since 1969. Many renowned players, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have participated in the program.
