Li Receives Emperor Science Award for Cancer Research

Rising senior Amy Grace Li ’18 has been chosen as one of 100 high school students nationwide to receive a 2017 Emperor Science Award from PBS LearningMedia, a digital educational resource library for teachers and students, and Stand Up To Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Li was one of nearly 800 students to apply for the awards by submitting an essay addressing why scientific research is important to finding a cure for cancer, what scientific field they would study, and why. As an award recipient, she has received a $1,500 stipend and a Google Chromebook to research cell-based immunotherapy of cancer for 10 weeks this summer at UAB.

Her mentor is Lawrence Lamb, PhD, Professor in the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology and Senior Scientist at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Li has already demonstrated a clear interest in cancer research,” says Lamb. “I am looking forward to helping her build a foundation for her to take her ideas and passion into the future.”

Li plans to explore methods that enhance existing treatment systems by improving efficiency and reducing adverse effects to patients. “I want the opportunity to bring my broad perspective on science and narrow it into a topic that I can investigate and synthesize into findings,” she says. “I have a desire to combine my work and passion into something that will have a positive impact on people.”

She is a member of the Indian Springs School Mock Trial team and Model United Nations Club, co-head of the Debate Club, and part of the Indian Springs Girls Tennis team. She also volunteers in Teen Court of Alabama and has played piano for 10 years.

An extension of the PBS documentary Ken Burns Presents CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES A Film by Barak Goodman, the Emperor Science Awards program was created in 2016 to encourage high school students to explore careers in science, specifically cancer research and care, through a mentoring opportunity. It is made possible by support from founding donors Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, and Novartis.

Congratulations, Amy!
