Markert ’26, Nakano ’23 Awarded at State Science Fair

Indian Springs students Lua Markert ’26 and Mayu Nakano ’23 earned numerous awards at the 2022 Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair, a virtual event hosted by Auburn University’s Department of Sciences and Mathematics from April 4-8. Categorical awards are determined by a panel of over 40 esteemed scientists and engineers.

Lua Markert ’26 won first place at the regional fair in the Junior Division Mathematics and Computer Science category for her project, “MRI Image Analysis Using an Image J Based Algorithm to Predict New-Onset Dementia.” Her success continued at the state fair, where she won first place in Junior Division Bio-Engineering, receiving a $100 cash prize. 

Additionally, Lua won the AU Biosystems Engineering Award (sponsored by Auburn University’s Biosystems Engineering Department), recognizing an individual who demonstrates an innovative approach to applying math or engineering to biological systems. She won the AU Talent in Mathematics and Statistics Award (sponsored by Auburn University’s Department of Mathematics and Science), recognizing a project from any category that demonstrates a strong mathematical and statistical analysis. Cash prizes for these awards totaled $125. 

Mayu Nakano ’23 won first place at the regional fair in the Senior Division Medicine and Health Science category for her project, “Evolution of Oncogenic Signatures within Glioblastoma Along a Spatiotemporal Axis.” At state, she won third place in Medicine, Health, and Translational Medical Sciences (sponsored by the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine).

Additionally, Mayu won the Biophysical Award (sponsored by The Biophysical Society), recognizing the top project with a biophysical science theme. She won the Naval Science Award (sponsored by the Office of Naval Research), recognizing students who show excellence in science or engineering. Cash prizes for these awards totaled $150.

Mayu will compete at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair for the second consecutive year. Her achievements have set a new record for Indian Springs.
