Spanish Language Students Visit Peru

Seven Indian Springs students spent 10 days in June exploring the culture, history, and sights of the Peruvian Andes as part of an academic enrichment trip.

The group, which included James Jia ’21, Will Miller ’21, Delaney Porter ’18, William Marshall ’21, Jack Yan ’21, Benjamin Zheng ’21, and Stephen Zheng ’21, visited natural and architectural wonders in and around the cities of Cuzco and Lima. Organized by WorldStrides Educational Student Travel, the trip featured destination highlights including the Maras salt mines, the ancient Incan cities of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Chaperoned by Springs science teacher Mak Obradovic, his wife, Dragana, and parent Carole Miller, the group also had the opportunity to visit a local school and an alpaca farm.

“Interacting with the people and experiencing their culture was amazing,” says Will. “I was able to practice my Spanish in every part of the trip, and also to learn a lot about Peruvian history. My favorite part of the trip was seeing the amazing engineering of Machu Picchu.”

“It was a really meaningful journey,” adds Stephen. “People usually focus on Machu Picchu and neglect the importance of Cusco, but it was one of my favorite places we visited. We learned about its long history as the capital of the Inca empire and about Inca religious ideas, including the worship of nature spirits. We even got to watch a World Cup game with some locals.”
