Hu ’18 Named Robertson Scholar

Springs senior Cher Hu has accepted an invitation to join the prestigious Robertson Scholars Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in fall 2018.

As a Robertson Scholar, she will receive a four-year merit scholarship including full tuition, room and board, other mandatory fees, summer experiences, and the ability to study at both UNC–Chapel Hill and Duke University. Hu is one of 31 graduating seniors from around the world to join the Robertson Class of 2022.

She has been a member of Springs’ award-winning Mock Trial Team and in 2017 helped launch the school’s participation in the Alabama YMCA Youth in Government Youth Legislature program. A runner and violinist, she has also been active on Springs' Cross Country Team and in the school's Instrumental Music program.

"Cher has been such a remarkable example of leadership for younger students here—they have seen her working hard for what she cares about, developing her own skills, and bringing others along by way of persuasion and passion,” says Indian Springs School Head of School Dr. Sharon Howell. “We are so proud of her accomplishment and know that she will make the very most of the opportunities it affords."

Created in 2000 through a $24 million gift from UNC alumnus Julian Robertson and his wife, Josie—who had one son who graduated from Duke, and another from UNC—the Robertson Program seeks to nurture young leaders through expanded and customized offerings. Scholars are chosen for their academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, moral character, demonstrated leadership, and ability to collaborate.

Hu says she is excited about the opportunity to be part of a community that is “mutually supportive, intellectually driven, and concerned about making a positive impact on the society.”

“I am looking forward to bonding with the other scholars and to taking part in the program's leadership development opportunities, such as the community summer, to discover my role in the world,” she says. “Right now, I aim to study political science and math, but I am eager to explore the academic resources at both UNC and Duke to make the most out of my college experience.”
