Dr. Sharon Howell

Head of School Dr. Sharon Howell joined the Indian Springs community in 2016 after two years as Associate Head of School at Northfield Mount Hermon in Gill, Mass. Sharon holds a B.A. from Connecticut University, an M.A. from Villanova, and both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University, where she worked for 15 years as a lecturer in history and literature, a senior administrator, and an academic and residential dean. A passionate and committed leader in secondary education, Sharon emphasizes opportunities for individualized learning and the importance of enabling young people to find the courage to know themselves honestly, listen to one another respectfully, collaborate generously, and think and act bravely as they become active citizens.. Since her arrival as Indian Springs’ first female Head of School, she has led innovations including a new Makerspace—a flexible and personalized learning environment designed to foster creative problem solving, curiosity, collaboration, and iterative learning—as well as a new Strategic Plan focusing on academic innovation, health and wellness, and access and equity. A published poet, she teaches The American Voice, one of our advanced courses offered through the prestigious Malone Schools Online Network.
