Four Qualify for Prestigious Math Exam

Four Indian Springs School students have qualified to take the 2017 American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a challenging, three-hour test that is part of a series of math exams that culminate with the International Mathematics Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary math exam in the world.

Springs students Bob Bao ’18 and Allen Xu ’17 qualified by their performance on the AMC (American Mathematics Competition) 12, which is typically taken by students in their 11th or 12th grade year, while Tenniel Miao ’19 and Donald Wilson ’19 qualified by their performance on the AMC10, the corresponding exam for students in their 9th or 10th grade year.

The AIME-I will be administered on March 7. Students who do well on the test will be invited to participate in the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad in April.

“I am immensely proud of my students,” says Springs math teacher Dr. Jonathan Gray. “To put their achievement in perspective, only the top 5% of all test-takers on the AMC12 and top 2.5% on the AMC10 are invited to compete on the AIME. When one considers the sample of the population that takes an AMC test, their invitation to take the AIME is all the more impressive!"

Way to go, Springs mathletes, and Go Springs!
