ISS Senior Wins 4th Place at Intel International Science Fair

ISS senior Tara Markert '14 won 4th place Friday in the Medicine and Health category at the 2014 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles!

More than 1,700 high school students from 70 countries, regions, and territories compete at the fair, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Markert's project, “Cytochrome C Oxidase Activity and Chemoresistance,” explores increasing the sensitivity of malignant glioma, a type of brain cancer typically fatal in 14 months, to the drug commonly used in its treatment.

Prior to the Intel fair, Markert's project won 1st place in March at the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair and 3rd place in April at the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, Markert has co-authored a paper currently being prepared for submission for peer-reviewed publication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation or the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Congratulations, Tara, on this fantastic recognition of your important work!
