Thanksgiving Means Turkey Bowl for ISS Alums, Students

For millions of Americans, Thanksgiving morning means sleeping late, preparing feasts, and watching parades and football games. For many ISS alumni, students, family and friends, the morning means one thing — the Turkey Bowl.

A self-organized annual event since 1992, the Turkey Bowl is an annual pick-up football game played on the rugby field at Ramsey Park in Birmingham.

"In the early years and now, the Turkey Bowl has been a good way for folks to get together while they are home for Thanksgiving," says Lee Bains '73, a longtime Turkey Bowl participant. "In the early years, it was a tackle football game without pads, and some of the dads played as well. After a few trips to the ER, we switched to a touch football game; the dads also quit playing when we couldn't keep up with the boys."

This year, the younger brothers (ISS Class of 2006 and younger) beat the older brothers (ISS Class of 2003 and older) and avenged a loss from 2008.

This year's participants included Lee Bains III '03, John Bains '06, Phillip Cezayirli '03, Elliot Corenblum '03, Carl Corenblum '06, Zach Corenblum '11, Courtney Denson '03, Ivy Duggan '07, Reeves Duggan '14, Christo Fawal '02, Marc Fawal '04, William Gamble '03, Bagby Hall, Kent Haines '03 (and his twin brothers), Victor Hanson IV '03, Alex McPhillips '03 (and his brother Dixon), Chase Nelson '07, D.G.
