Going Green Awards Has ISS Imprint

Springs faculty, parents and alumni were well represented during the recent Going Green Awards sponsored by the Birmingham Business Journal. The award recipients and finalists were honored at a luncheon October 1 in Birmingham.

ISS Biology Teacher Bob Pollard was a finalist in the Green Educator of the Year category. A biology teacher at ISS for 11 years, he has been instrumental in starting the Fertile Minds Learning Garden, the school’s organic garden and outdoor learning laboratory.

Pollard has also encouraged green living among his students, teaching them to build wind generators and solar panels and convert vegetable oil from the ISS dining hall to biodiesel fuel for school vehicles. He has also taken students on international trips to study rainforest and coral reef ecology and natural history. Pollard’s innovation in the classroom was touted as a factor in Indian Springs receiving the 2009 Siemens Award, given to the Alabama’s top math and science AP program.

Other Springs community members recognized at the Going Green Awards were:

  • Edwin Marty '90, executive director of Jones Valley Urban Farm, which won Green Educator of the Year
  • Gray Plosser Jr. '63, president of KPS Group, which designed the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, winner of the Green Project of the Year
  • Merrill Stewart Jr. P '03, '08, '11, founder and president of Stewart Perry, which built the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center.
