Freeman Named Outstanding Alum of the Year Award

Springs has awarded its Outstanding Alum of the Year Award to Dr. Arthur M. Freeman III '59.

Dr. Freeman received the award during Alumni Weekend activities May 30. The award came with a multimedia presentation of his life and a commemorative plaque that includes a photograph of the ISS campus taken by Emory Bright '09.

Dr. Freeman has had a distinguished career as a psychiatrist and educator, currently serving as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a psychiatrist with Grayson & Associates in Birmingham. He has also served as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and as Professor, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and Dean at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.

He has served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy in Oakland, Calif., and taught and did research on schizophrenia at Stanford University.

Holding an A.B. in Philosophy from Harvard University and a M.D. from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Freeman completed his medical internship at the University of Florida and psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins University, where he served as Chief Resident. He also completed a Fellowship in Psychiatry at the University of London.

Dr. Freeman has received many recognitions and awards. These include a National Merit Scholarship from Harvard; a Biochemistry Fellowship from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden; a Fellowship in Hepatic Disease from the Royal Free Hospital in London, England; and a Laughlin Fellowship in the American College of Psychiatrists.

A member of the Board of the American College of Psychiatrists, he has over 100 publications, has lectured nationally and internationally, and has been principal investigator on numerous grants. He is listed in Best Doctors in America, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World and has served as a consultant for the World Health Organization.

A native of Birmingham, he and wife, Linda, have three children and three grandchildren.
