Service, Celebration Focus of D-Day, College Day

Students served and celebrated as they participated in D-Day and College Day May 1!

D-Day — Development Day, a semiannual day of service at ISS — combined on-campus and off-campus projects with recreation and entertainment. Off-campus projects included working on a Habitat for Humanity home site and providing lunch at the Old Firehouse Shelter. D-Day also included the annual ISS Blood Drive in coordination with the American Red Cross that yielded 33 units of blood, 19 from first-time donors.

For the first time, the school presented the Springs Service Award to students who have exemplified extraordinary service to the community. Given by the ISS Development Office, the award is given to one student per class. The inaugural award recipients were Kate Hawley '09, Michelle Luo '10, Andrea Mayo '11, Emily Cutler '12 and Caleb Caldwell '13.

The students kicked off the day with a student gathering in the Theater with featured speaker Edwin Marty ‘90, executive director of Jones Valley Urban Farm. He spoke of the farm's work and encouraged students to use their gifts and passions to make a difference in the world.

After work, lunch, the awards ceremony and free time, students, faculty and staff enjoyed dinner provided by Jim 'n Nick's Bar-B-Q and a free concert by Wild Sweet Orange in the Theater.

To observe College Day, seniors wore T-shirts from the school they have chosen as their college destination and celebrated this important milestone!

Congratulations, everyone, on a meaningful and great day, and special thanks to Commissioners of Citizenship Collin Janich '09 and Elliott Bell '10 for their hard work!
