Mylo Waara ’24 Wins District Art Competition

Mylo Waara ’24 placed first in the high school craft category for state district 4B at the 2023 Visual Arts Achievement Awards. Their design, “Sundown Jacket,” was on display in an exhibit hosted by the University of Montevallo. Mylo advances to the state competition in Montgomery on April 13, and their work will be on display during the month of April in an exhibit of all regional winners at the Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists Gallery.

Sponsored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Visual Arts Achievement Program provides local and state recognition for student achievement in the visual arts. The program is designed to offer encouragement to young artists, showcase their work, and offer opportunities for advanced training beyond high school. Entries are divided into six different categories based on medium: craft, digital art, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

This is the second year in a row an Indian Springs student has placed first in district 4B, a highly competitive district that includes Shelby County, Hoover, and Vestavia Schools. Only first-place winners advance to the state competition. Last year, Kimely Li ’23 advanced in the drawing category.

Congratulations to Mylo and art teacher Clay Colvin ’95!
