Owens '19, Simmons '19 Receive National Merit Scholarships

Indian Springs seniors Kendall Owens ’19 and Sarah Niles Simmons ’19 have been selected to receive $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Owens and Simmons, two of five Indian Springs seniors to be named 2019 National Merit finalists, were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on their academic records, standardized test scores, contributions to Indian Springs, community activities, personal essays, and letters of recommendation.

In addition to a National Merit Scholarship, Owens recently received a Gold Medal (awarded for “the most outstanding works in the nation”), a Silver Key, and an Honorable Mention in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She also recently scored a perfect 36 on the ACT and currently serves as a Student Ambassador and Peer Mentor for the Indian Springs community.

Simmons was selected last year to serve as a Girl Scouts delegate to the 62nd annual Commission on the Status of Women, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. She currently serves as President of the Indian Springs Gender Equality Club as well as President of the Indian Springs Choir, which she has been a member of since eighth grade.
