Poetry Out Loud

Students write and perform poetry, participate in regional and state competitions.
Faculty Advisor: D’Anthony Allen

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies.

Poetry Out Loud can be conducted virtually or in person. Competition begins at the school level with winners advancing to the regional, state, and ultimately national finals. Students may choose to participate in one of three ways: students may choose one poem from the poetryoutloud.org website to memorize and recite as part of the Poetry Out Loud competition. In the Original Poetry Out Loud competition, students write, memorize and recite their own original poem, or, as part of the Social Issue Poem Competition, they may write, memorize, and recite their own poem addressing topical societal challenges they identify as relevant.
