Personal Note:
"Only connect!" E.M. Forster famously wrote. "Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height." My goal as an educator is to help my students make connections through narrative. Between other subjects and disciplines. To other places, times, and people. To each other, themselves. Most of all, I hope that they learn to connect, as Forster writes, the prose and the passion—the creative and the analytical—not only in their written work but in their lives beyond. For this not only is the heart of creative writing (the meeting point of imagination and intellect) but also of empathy, or as Forster suggests, "human love at its height."
