Students Explore Democracy in Action

A delegation of eight Indian Springs School students explored democracy in action at the 2017 Alabama YMCA Youth in Government Youth Legislature program Feb. 24-26 in Montgomery.

The program gives student participants the opportunity to take part in a mock legislative session and to practice submitting bills to a youth senate and arguing their merits through floor and committee debates. Sessions are held at the Alabama State Capitol, State House, Judicial Building, and local hotels. This year, students met Youth Legislature alumni and Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer.

Eighth grader Ethan Howell ’21 received an award for outstanding participation in the First-Year Senate.

“This is a great way for students to learn what the legislative process is like at the state level and to meet people who work in the field,” says faculty advisor D’Anthony Allen. “I’d also like to give a shout-out to junior Cher Hu for her leadership in organizing to bring the delegation of Springs students. This is the first time that Indian Springs has taken part in the Youth Legislature program, and we plan to attend again next year.”

2017 participants also included:

Henry Giattina ’17 - Senate
Dewey Wilbanks ’17 - Senate
Bin Cho ’18 – Senate
Tenniel Miao ’19 - House
Cher Hu ’18 - House
Isaac Zhou ’19 - House
