ISS Sophomore Advances to Semifinals of CCTV-Français Contest
ISS sophomore Alice Zhang ’18 will compete this weekend in the semifinals of the CCTV French Contest (China Division) hosted in Beijing by CCTV-Français—the French channel of China's largest broadcasting network—and Alliance Française.
More than 300 students from China, France, Switzerland, Singapore, and the United States submitted video entries to participate in the first round of competition. Zhang, who has lived in China, France, and the United States, talked about these three experiences and created a tongue-in-cheek video tutorial detailing how to pass as an “authentic” member of the three cultures.
Zhang and 19 others were selected to advance to the semifinals of the China Division based on their superior language skills. “Qualified applicants demonstrated originality, elegance, and perfect mastery of the French language,” says a CCTV news release. Fifteen additional students advanced to the semifinals of the contest’s France Division.
As part of the televised semifinal round, Zhang will discuss works of art—paintings and photographs—that she has created, says ISS French teacher Dr. Jonathan Horn. “The pieces are stunning,” says Horn. “She will describe how works by artists from France and the United States have inspired her.”
