Student Life

We are approaching the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year with the goal of fostering a healthy student life experience. Clubs will be able to meet regularly, student government will go about its business, and most major student events will take place. However, all of these staples of student life at Springs will have to happen in reimagined forms.

The Student Life Team is in the process of developing the full details of how these activities will take place safely. For now, we are able to share the following measures:
  • For at least the first semester, there will be no field trips.
  • Clubs will be encouraged to meet virtually. Clubs planning to meet in-person on campus will need to select and reserve a meeting location from a pre-approved list, share their plans with Student Life Coordinator D’Anthony Allen and Dean of Students William Blackerby, and record and submit meeting attendance to Mr. Allen or Mr. Blackerby in case the need for contact tracing should arise.
  • Mr. Blackerby will be working closely with the Commissioners of Recreation on creative and safe ways to maintain the regular Springs calendar of social events.
  • We plan to make creative use of outdoor spaces at Springs for the fall and spring semester student concerts, with Engel Terrace serving as the stage and McLean Lawn as seating for the audience.
  • The Student Life Team will work closely with the Commissioners of Citizenship to plan creative and engaging Development Days for both the fall and spring semesters. If at all possible, both D-Days will be in-person, though we will not be able to offer off-campus projects for the fall semester. We will make additional plans for another “D-Day at Home” if the COVID-19 situation requires us to be away from campus.
  • The Student Life Team will also work closely with the Commissioners of Services to find a creative and safe way for the student store to operate during the school day.
  • We fully intend to offer the senior lunch out privilege but will not be able to do so as early as we have in earlier years.

Additionally, we are in the process of reviewing and revising the Indian Springs School Student-Parent Handbook (the “Read ‘n’ Heed”) to reflect expectations of student behavior on campus during the pandemic. On this and the other items mentioned above, students can expect further detailed communication directly from the Dean of Students’ office in early August.

We are excited at the prospect of having students back on campus and look forward to seeing you in August!
