ISS Students Earn 59 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Thirty Indian Springs School students have received 59 awards—including 10 Gold Keys, the highest level of achievement at the regional level—as part of the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

Founded in 1923, the program seeks to celebrate student achievement in the visual and literary arts in 29 categories, including architecture, photography, flash fiction, poetry, painting, novel writing, video game design, and more. Notable alumni include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, Robert Redford, Ken Burns, and other creative visionaries.

“We who know ISS students know their capacity to use and expand the possibilities of language—on the page, in the classroom, or in a Town Meeting,” says Latin and English teacher Douglas Ray, who each fall encourages students in his Writers’ Workshop class to submit works to the competition. “I am thrilled that these students were motivated to find an audience beyond the walls of ISS and to receive recognition and validation for their efforts and talent in the process. Take a look at this list; I am confident that you'll see some of these names grace the covers of books in the future just as ISS alumnae/i have done again and again.”

“Indian Springs students also produce amazing work in the visual arts—photography, film and animation, and drawing and illustration,” says art teacher Clay Colvin ’95. “The Scholastic Awards are a fantastic opportunity for students to share their creativity with a larger audience, and to see artistic achievement celebrated.”

Submissions are evaluated for originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision. Students receiving Gold Keys will advance to compete for Gold and Silver medals at the national level this spring. To learn more about the awards, visit www.artandwriting.org.

Congratulations to our 2016 winners!
