Seven ISS Seniors Named 2016 National Merit Semifinalists

Seven Indian Springs School seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. McKenna Barney ’16, Ashlynn Berry ’16, Claire Chen ’16, Daun Lee ’16, Michael O’Malley ’16, Rob Pulliam ’16, and Cheska Romero ’16 were selected based on their achievements on the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

The nationwide pool of about 16,000 Semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These students have a chance to compete for approximately 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million to be offered next spring.

About 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level in February, and about half of Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship and earn the title of Merit Scholar on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

More than 315,000 high school students have been named National Merit Scholars since the program was established in 1955. Scholarships are underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance; about 250 corporations and business organizations; and 190 colleges and universities.

“We are excited that these seven members of the Indian Springs School Class of 2016 have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists,” says ISS Director Gareth Vaughan. “The distinction is a tribute to their hard work, dedication, and exceptional ability, and we look forward to their continued success in the competition.”
