How Do You Weigh an Elephant?

ISS rising senior Elquis Castillo '16 is building a 360-degree, multi-camera system to give researchers a new tool for estimating the body mass composition of an elephant.

Castillo’s work, part of an independent study at UAB he began as a junior, may help reveal the differences in weight between zoo elephants, which are increasingly infertile, and their leaner counterparts in the wild.

In "That Elephant Will Not Fit in an MRI," Forbes contributing writer T.J. McCue talks about the challenges of weighing an elephant and Castillo's role in helping solve the problem:

Great work, Elquis!
