Challenging, Inspiring, Active & Delicious !

At its core, Springs’ Fertile Minds Learning Garden reflects the belief that education can be many things: challenging, inspiring, active—and delicious.
Indian Springs School students work in the Garden throughout the year to produce more than 30 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables that are used in meals prepared by the school’s Dining Hall and sold to the public at our Summer Farm Stand.

Made possible through the generosity of Springs alumni, parents, and friends, the Garden underscores the values of organic gardening and locally sourced food. It also highlights the school’s approach of taking lessons from books and applying them directly to real life: All Springs 9th graders get to practice growing vegetables and herbs in raised beds while they study sustainable agriculture.

Through the Garden, students get a firsthand look at where their food comes from. They also explore the benefits of finding chemical-free solutions to agricultural issues such as soil health and pest control. And they discover how composting reduces food waste and offsets fertilizer costs to produce the next generation of crops. Says Garden Director and biology teacher Bob Pollard, “It’s Learning through Living at its best.”
