Latin Students Visit Rome

Six Indian Springs School AP Latin and Latin III students spent Spring Break 2018 exploring the history, culture, and sights of Rome as part of an academic-enrichment trip led by Latin teacher William Blackerby ‘05.

The group, which included Whit McDaniel '19, Will Smith '19, Moritz Miller '20, John Slaughter '20, Gio Garza '20, and Jack Swanner '21, visited architectural wonders from the Coliseum and Circus Maximus to the Roman Forum and Hadrian’s Villa during a seven-day itinerary organized through a partnership with the Rome-based Paideia Institute for Humanistic Study.

The trip, which was chaperoned by parents Jason Swanner and Cynthia McDaniel, also included day trips to Vatican City, Tiber Island, and the city of Tivoli.

"It was an experience of a lifetime,” says Gio. “The fact that you get to see and learn so much in so little time while being immersed in Italian culture is incredible!"

Says John, “The Rome trip provided a newfound layer of reality and understanding to my classical education. Being able to move my Latin classroom to Rome, the birthplace of the language itself, is remarkable. The most interesting experience I took from the trip was witnessing the cohabitation between the old and new styles of Rome, with each era building upon the last, preserving both the cultural and physical layouts of the city.”

Adds Whit, “I’ve taken three years of Latin—and had a good time with it—but nothing has been more instrumental for my education than visiting Rome and experiencing its vast history and culture. Though it sounds cliché, Latin has become more than just a class that I have to take. It’s alive.”
