Jiao ’18 Named Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar

Springs student Ken Jiao ’18 has been named a Top 300 Scholar in the 77th Regeneron Science Talent Search—one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors—for his continued research in breast cancer metastasis.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search has provided a stage for the country's best and brightest young scientists to present original research to nationally recognized scientists since 1942. Alumni have earned many of the world’s most distinguished science and math honors, including 12 Nobel Prizes, 11 National Medals of Science, and two Fields Medals.

More than 1,800 students entered this year’s competition. As part of the selection process, entrants were required to submit a report detailing their independent research project, responses to short answer and essay prompts, and recommendation forms from their teachers by Nov. 15.

For placing in the Top 300, Jiao received $4,000 in cash prizes—$2,000 for himself, and $2,000 for Indian Springs to use toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities in honor of Teacher of Merit Dr. Tanya Hyatt. On Jan. 23, he could also be named as one of 40 Finalists, who will each receive a $25,000 prize and an invitation to compete in the final competition, where the top prize is $250,000.

Jiao was recently awarded $25,000 at the national finals of the 2017 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology after earning top individual honors and an additional $3,000 at one of six regional competitions. He was also awarded a 3rd place prize of $1,000 in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category at the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Congratulations on your latest achievement, Ken—and good luck!
