Girls Outdoor Track & Field Wins Four State Titles

Indian Springs’ Girls Outdoor Track & Field Team competed in seven events and brought home seven medals, including four state titles, at the AHSAA 3A State Championships in Cullman on May 5-6. Our three-athlete team placed in every event they competed in, earning enough points to claim fifth overall.

Runner Catherine Hinson ’25 made the podium twice with personal records. She finished third in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:25.43 and second in the 3200-meter with a time of 11:46.51.

Cara Huff ’26 placed third in the shot put with a distance of 35 feet, 2 inches. Then, she soared to first place in the discus with a length of 132 feet, 7 inches, defeating second place by more than 28 feet and smashing a 17-year-old 3A state record. In addition, she had the longest throw in any classification 1A-7A all weekend.

Elise Picard ’23 swept the distance races placing first in the 800-meter, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter races. She now holds the most state titles of any athlete for Indian Springs School. Earlier this year, Elise claimed the 3A cross country state championship and swept the distance races at the 3A indoor track & field state championships. Elise was one of seven athletes from the class of 2023 that will continue their sport at the collegiate level. She will attend Emory University in the fall and compete for their cross-country team.

Assistant Athletic Director Chris Tetzlaff says the countless hours of practice to perfect their individual technique while working together as a team was vital for these three athletes. “The bond formed between the three was incredible to watch. The support they had for each other was amazing,” Coach Tetzlaff said. “They have established a high bar for every team that comes after them. Hopefully, they have built a great foundation to develop into a strong program at Indian Springs.”

Congratulations to Elise, Cara, and Catherine! Go Springs!
