Evan Jack ’23 Wins District Debate Tournament

Evan Jack ’23 emerged victorious at the Mockingbird District Tournament held at Vestavia Hills High School on February 17. Evan came in first place in a field of 18 competitors in his specialty, the Lincoln-Douglas style debate. The win secured Evan’s place at the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) national tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, in June.

Evan is currently ranked third in the state of Alabama by the NDSA due to points accumulated this year with wins at the Samford University Bishop Guild Invitational in January and Prattville High Lion Classic in November.

The Lincoln–Douglas debate is a type of one-on-one, face-off style debate in which two debaters take opposing positions on a proposed resolution. The debate takes the form of a series of speeches, with each debater alternating between speaking for and against the resolution. This style of debate is named after the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 in which future president Abraham Lincoln and former senator Stephen Douglas discussed the issue of slavery.

Evan won Indian Springs’ first state championship in debate as a sophomore. This will be his second trip to nationals.

Congratulations to Evan, and go Springs!
