Underwood ’23, Walker ’23 Win Three State Titles

Indian Springs swimmers Mark Underwood ’23 and Aurelie Walker ’23 claimed three state titles at the AHSAA championship meet on December 3.

For the second consecutive year, five-year Indian Springs swimmer Mark Underwood ’23 claimed a first-place gold medal in the boys 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 55.49 set a new record in the state of Alabama. Mark also emerged in first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.98. He holds 2021 and 2020 state titles in the 500-yard freestyle.

Aurelie Walker ’23 took the gold medal in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24:10 and finished second place by only a couple of tenths in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.84. She holds 2021 state titles in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

New team member Milan Mehra ’26 finished 11th place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22:67 and 14th place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.81.

The team, coached by Mark’s mother, Teresa Underwood, also had excellent results at sectionals and the Vestavia Hills High School Rebel Classic and Fall Classic. Exchange student Jonathan Schmidt '23 competed with the team at the Rebel Classic.
