Elise Picard ’23 Wins State Championship in Cross Country

Indian Springs runner Elise Picard ’23 emerged victorious, claiming her first state title at the AHSAA 3A Cross Country State Championships. In a field of 148 runners, she crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of second place with a time of 19:11.23.

Not far behind was 10th-grader Catherine Hinson ’25, finishing in 18th place.

The championship was held at Oakville Indian Mounds Cross Country Course on Saturday, November 5. Rainy, less-than-ideal conditions contributed to the challenge the girls overcame and made their top 20 results even more impressive.

Hard work and dedication have paid off for Elise, who was recently named a School Winner in the 2022 Heisman High School Scholarship Competition honoring standout student-athletes. She climbed the podium during her years at Indian Springs, winning three bronze medals in 2021-2022 and placing in the top 20 at state the year before.

Catherine placed in the top 20 of every race she ran this year, including a first-place win at the Grand River Invitational Girls Varsity 5K in September.

Elise and Catherine qualified for the state competition by placing first and third at sectionals on October 27. Mark Underwood ’23 and Matthew Kincl ’24 also qualified for the state competition, while Manuela Montero ’25, Etta Rominger ’25, Julia Rosenstiel ’25, and Zeina Refai ’25 all posted personal best times.

Elise’s win makes Indian Springs’ tenth state title in the past five years, with the others being in boys and girls soccer, boys and girls swimming, and girls tennis.

Congratulations to our cross country runners, coaches George Mange and Amy Wammack, and athletic trainer Brad Skiff on a great season!
