Kung ’22, Nakano ’23 Awarded at International Science Fair

Catherine Kung ’22 and Mayu Nakano ’23 received awards at the 2022 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Regeneron is the world’s largest high school science competition, including 1,750 entries from 49 states and 63 countries. Projects are evaluated for creativity, innovation, and level of scientific inquiry. This year’s fair took place virtually May 7-13, and the winners were announced May 12 and 13 at a ceremony in Atlanta.

Catherine was a Special Award winner, placing third in the Cybersecurity division (sponsored by the National Security Agency Research Directorate) for her project, “Recognition of American Sign Language (ASL) Trigger Words Using RF Sensors in Combination with Deep Neural Networks.” This award recognizes exceptional mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, and neuroscience skills while promoting cyberspace protection.

Mayu Nakano was a Grand Award winner, placing fourth in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category for her project, “Evolution of Oncogenic Signatures Within Glioblastoma Along a Spatiotemporal Axis.” This category focuses on human health and disease and includes studies on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, or epidemiology of disease and other damage to the human body or mental systems. Mayu received a cash prize of $500.

Catherine and Mayu set a new record for Indian Springs by advancing to compete at Regeneron for the second consecutive year after winning first place in their respective categories at the 2022 Central Alabama Regional Science Fair in March. Mayu won third place in Medicine and Health Science and the Biophysical Award at the state science fair.

In addition to her science fair honors, Catherine won first place in the 2022 Alabama Science Scholar Search, receiving a $4,000 scholarship, and first place for the 2022 SPIE Best Student Paper Award for her paper titled “Development of bio-inspired flexible artificial skin and sensory information processing using a Kohonen artificial network.”
