Four Students Attend NAIS Diversity Conference

Four Indian Springs students—Elijah Baay ’22, Avery Gilliam ’24, Cynthia Li ’23, and Misbah Meghani ’24—attended the 2021 National Association of Independent Schools’ Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC).

Held virtually from November 30 to December 3, the conference gathered multiracial and multicultural student leaders from independent high schools across the U.S. and abroad for seminars, workshops, and group discussions about inclusion on campus.

“SDLC meant a lot to me and helped me recognize myself for who I am quite a lot more,” says Elijah Baay ’22. “It was a wonderful and helpful experience and amazing to see so many people like me altogether (in relation to the affinity space). It was also helpful in being able to better recognize the world around me for what it is and ways to help it.”

SDLC encourages student attendees to take leadership in their school communities and implement the ideas they learned at the conference upon returning to campus.

In conjunction with the SDLC, Student Life Coordinator and English teacher D’Anthony Allen and French teacher Jean Bassene attended the People of Color Conference (PoCC), which provides leadership and professional development for people of color in independent schools.
