History Teacher Dr. Colin Davis Receives Fulbright Scholarship

Indian Springs history teacher Dr. Colin Davis has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study in Norway during the 2021-2022 school year.

Dr. Davis will work with the Norwegian Maritime Museum to collect oral histories from people who worked on Cunard ocean liners running between Southhampton, New York and London, England. He will interview participants about life and working conditions on board, recording a segment of labor history that hasn’t been documented previously. The interviews will be translated into English and published in a new book.

“The act of discovery—that’s the beautiful thing about oral histories,” says Dr. Davis. “You’re capturing an intimate portrait of peoples’ lives.”

Dr. Davis connected with the museum before submitting his application to Fulbright. Over several months, his proposal was reviewed by historians in the U.S. and Norway. Once accepted, he applied for temporary residency in Norway. He will live there for nine months, from September to May. His daughters, Indian Springs alums Stella Davis ’16, Ava Davis ’18, and Madeleine Davis ’18, plan to visit for the holidays.

Dr. Davis is a transnational labor historian and has published six books exploring the lives of fishers, dockworkers, railroad works, and coal minors. He has received numerous grants and fellowships and has lectured across Europe, Australia, and North America.

Before coming to Indian Springs, Dr. Davis taught at the university level for over 20 years, retiring in 2018 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He served as Chair of the History Department. He earned his B.A. in history and sociology at the University of Warwick in England and his M.A. and Ph.D. in U.S. history at the State University of New York.

Congratulations, Dr. Davis!
