Mac Fleming: The Living Archive of Indian Springs School

Happy birthday to Indian Springs legend Mac Fleming, who turned 97 today! Mr. Fleming has worked for the school since it was founded in 1952—as a history teacher, faculty adviser, dorm proctor, college placement adviser, faculty commissioner of protection, interim director, and now as the school archivist and historian.

As a special surprise, we are excited to present this video tribute filmed earlier in the school year. James Simon, Assistant Head of School for Advancement and External Affairs, interviewed Mr. Fleming for nearly two hours in October to capture his recollections about the opening of the school in 1952, about his year as interim head of school and also learn from other current and former colleagues about the impact he has had as the only member of the faculty to have continuously served the school since it first opened its doors nearly 70 years ago.

Many thanks to Charles Robinson '59, Charles Ellis, Bob Cooper, Mac LaCasse, Jonathan Horn '75, Greg Van Horn, Lauren Wainwright '88, John Slaughter '20 and Jordyn Hudson '21 for taking the time to sit for interviews, Vulcan Media for their great work on this final product, Interim Head of School Don North for conceiving this idea, Rachel Wallace in our communications office, and to Lisa Read '78 and Mary North for their ongoing work in the archives.
