Catherine Kung ’22 Wins First Place in State Science Competition

Indian Springs sophomore Catherine Kung ’22 won first place overall in the 2020 Alabama Junior Academy of Science State Paper Reading Competition, held virtually on March 20.

Catherine presented her ongoing research on the creation of an artificial skin made of pectin, a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables. Catherine developed a process to jellify and dry the pectin into a flexible, skin-like surface. She found that adding heat or pressure to the skin creates a responsive electrical current that demonstrates multisensory capabilities and can be measured using copper wiring and metallic microbeads.

Catherine was one of 15 students selected to advance to the state competition and one of five to advance to the final round, which involved virtual conference with the judges.

As part of her award, Catherine received a $2,000 scholarship. She will advance to compete in the 58th National Junior Science and Humanities Symposia later this year.

Congratulations, Catherine—and go Springs!
