Indian Springs Students Earn High Marks at Regional Science Fair

Five Indian Springs students received awards at the 2020 Central Alabama Regional Science Fair hosted by the UAB Center for Community Outreach Development: 

Hooper Markert ’21 — 1st Place, Medicine and Health Sciences
“Novel PIM Inhibitor Produces Significant Anti-Tumor Effects in Human Hepatoblastoma Cells”

Janina Wu ’21 — 2nd Place, Biology
“Dietary Sugars, Bacterial Colonization and the Behavior of Fruit Flies”

Catherine Kung ’22 — 2nd Place, Engineering
“Bio-Inspired Flexible Multi-Sensory Artificial Skin”

Amitis Moradkhani ’22 — 3rd Place, Environmental and Earth Science
“Enhanced Dye Filtration by Copper-Metal Organic Framework Nanofiltration Membranes”

Jack Yan ’21 — Honorable Mention, Engineering
“Prosthetic Arm Based on Human Anatomy”

Hooper, Janina, Catherine, and Amitis will advance to the state fair on March 26–27 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Hooper was selected to advance as well to the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) on May 10-15 in California.

In addition to her 3rd place award, Amitis received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Stockholm Junior Water Prize/Stockholm International Water Institute.
