Springs Students Design Chair for Benefit Auction

Indian Springs students Emma Osterman '21 and Yvonne Su '23 have been hard at work designing an Adirondack chair for donation to the 2019 Ecofest Market and Auction.

Ecofest 2019 will benefit the Southern Environmental Center and its Magic City School Bus program, which allows students from underserved schools in the Birmingham area to go on field trips to the Environmental Center and to explore Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. The Market and Auction will feature locally made merchandise and art, including Emma and Yvonne’s Adirondack chair and chairs created by students at other local schools.

When art teacher Clay Colvin ’95 asked if they were interested in the project, Emma and Yvonne jumped at the opportunity to utilize their skills in art and technology. Yvonne drew the design, which depicts a patch of sunflowers and a butterfly in flight. Emma then mapped the design in a special software so that it could be transferred onto the chair using Springs’ new X-Carve machine. They have been working on it for almost three weeks.

Colvin, along with computer science teacher William Belser ’80, math teacher Dr. Jon Gray, Physical Plant Superintendent Blake Berry, and carpenter Velch Denny assisted Emma and Yvonne with staining the wood, using the X-Carve, and assembling the chair.

“It’s been a great project to do in our Makerspace and a cool way to use the X-Carve,” says Colvin. “We created something different than what anyone else will have.”

Way to go, Emma and Yvonne!
