Kim ’19 To Attend 50th New York String Orchestra Seminar

Springs violinist Honney Kim ’19 has been selected, for the second year in a row, to participate in the prestigious New York String Orchestra Seminar. As part of the 10-day seminar, the orchestra will perform twice at Carnegie Hall in late December, including a performance with acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell in honor of the seminar’s 50th anniversary.

More than 400 players competed for the 45 string and 18 wind and brass spots. Kim traveled to New York City last week to present a live audition. She is one of 24 violinists chosen for the 2018 seminar. Every player received a scholarship for the full cost of the seminar, totaling more than $3,750 in value.

The New York String Orchestra Seminar has offered professional training to gifted young musicians since 1969. Many renowned players, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have participated in the program.

Kim has won prizes in national and international competitions and has performed with some of the South’s most prestigious orchestras. In March, she performed in the Alabama Symphony Orchestra & Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra Side by Side Concert after being named grand prize winner of the 2017 Lois Pickard Scholarship Competition.
