Jiao ’18 Receives $2,500 National Merit Scholarship

Indian Springs senior Ken Jiao ’18 has been selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Jiao, one of six Indian Springs seniors to be named 2018 National Merit finalists, was selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on his academic record, standardized test scores, contributions and leadership at Indian Springs, community activities, personal essay, and a letter of recommendation.

In February, Jiao, who earned a perfect 36 on the ACT, was also named a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.

Jiao has been recognized in national and international science competitions for his groundbreaking breast cancer research, which is shedding light on a potential way to determine if breast cancer cells are highly invasive, and how to inhibit them from spreading throughout the body.

Last May, he earned third place—and a $1,000 award—in the category of Cellular and Molecular Biology at the 2017 International Science and Engineering Fair. In December, he advanced to the national finals of the 2017 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, where he won a $25,000 scholarship after earning top individual honors and an additional $3,000 scholarship at one of six regional competitions. In January, he was named a Top 300 Scholar in the 77th Regeneron Science Talent Search, winning $2,000 for himself and $2,000 for Indian Springs to use toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities.

The National Merit award can be used at any U.S. college or university. In the fall, Jiao will join UPenn’s dual-degree Life Sciences and Management program, where he hopes to continue his research.
