Gueye '18 Signs To Play Division III Volleyball at Sewanee

Surrounded by family, friends, and coaches, Indian Springs senior Sonia Gueye ’18 signed Tuesday to play Division III Volleyball at Sewanee: The University of the South.

Gueye has been playing competitive volleyball since age 10. She competed on the Indian Springs Girls Varsity Volleyball Team for four years, beginning in 8th grade. Gueye was selected to the All-Tournament Team during her freshman, junior, and senior years. She has also been named Most Valuable Player for the past two seasons. In addition, she has spent seven years playing club volleyball; she completed her final club season with the Birmingham Volleyball Club.

Assistant Athletic Director Christina Tetzlaff saluted Gueye as a “fine student-athlete—the type of player that led us in almost every stat.”

“We needed her for serving, for hitting. for blocking, even for setting,” said Tetzlaff. “She’s the player that is so versatile, she can do anything and everything for the betterment of her team. It sounds cliché, but she is truly that player that every coach wants.

“Sonia, I wish you the best of luck and all best wishes at Sewanee,” she said. “Your perseverance, your grit, your determination, your loyalty, and your love of family and friends will help you prevail in anything and everything you do.”

Volleyball Coach Lauren O’Sullivan congratulated Gueye on an outstanding high school career. “You’re strong, responsible, loyal … This will take you far in life,” she said. “You’re going to do great at Sewanee. I can’t wait to see the awesome things that you accomplish.”

For Gueye the signing represented a “huge milestone” as she transitions from high school to college. “Springs volleyball has taught me a lot,” she said. “It has taught me the importance of working together with other people to achieve the greater goal of winning. Ultimately, at the end of the day, it has also taught me teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance.”
