JUNE — ONE-WEEK COURSES Fun Tour de France

Description: Love to hear about France, its culture, its music, its food? Join us for the summer program. You will play French games, make crafts related to France, and will learn how to cook and prepare a few recipes. You will also be able to taste French food (madeleines, crepes, quiches, cheese and more). It is a fun and lively course. You will get a culinary and cultural tour of France and will enjoy playing French board games and outside games (such as La petanque, la chasse au tresor, Le beret...). So, come along and have fun. Plus, it will be great to learn some French fun vocabulary. You will hear French music, and each of you will leave with a fun leaflet full of French recipes, fun French vocabulary, and French gifts.
French Conversation and Cultural Immersion for Adults

Description: Adults, you love French, or perhaps you teach French and enjoy speaking French. It will be a fun and lively course. This course is perfect for anyone who would love to enjoy a one-week French immersion, but not too far from home.
Grammar Boot Camp

Description: If you’re making decisions in your writing based on the age-old reasoning of “it sounds right” instead of knowing the wherefores / whys of language, then this course is for you. We’ll study a wide array of grammar, mechanics, and usage in order for students to understand the complexities and quirks of the English language. Students will learn the vocabulary of language and learn how the various parts of a phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph, and argument work together as parts of a linguistic machine.
Advanced Techniques for the Beginning Music Producer (Younger Grades)

ISS Cross Country Camp

Description: Standardized testing is a potentially stressful reality for the college-bound student. Preparing for these tests can maximize student performance and minimize test-related anxiety. Employing real test questions and simulated testing environments, students will explore various methods of test-taking to understand what works best for them. We will look at test forms and the content typically covered, while recognizing students' particular strengths and focusing on students' areas for improvement. At the conclusion of this course, students will emerge as more confident, better-prepared masters of SAT/PSAT.
The Actor’s Toolbox: Mime, Juggling, and Improvisation

Description: Student actors will learn the basics of juggling, mime, and comic improvisation through a series of activities and Theatre games. Basic three-ball juggling patterns will be taught as well as standard illusory mime skills (The Wall, The Rope, The Walk, etc.). Students will perform original mime pieces and demonstrate their newfound juggling and improvisational acting skills in a short performance showcase on the last day of the course. This course provides hands-on activities that will help participants develop such business-related concepts as product, service, market, revenue, expense, personal development, teamwork, and ethics. In addition, participants will meet with entrepreneurs, visit Innovation Depot, Birmingham’s internationally-recognized business incubator, and learn a bit about business writing.

Description: In this course, participants will have opportunities to learn how to make, use, and break various types of ciphers. Besides the fun of encoding and decoding secret messages, participants will also have opportunities to learn connections with mathematical ideas that make online transactions and other digital communications secure. The course will include a secret-message scavenger hunt on the ISS campus.
JULY — TWO-WEEK COURSES
Writing Organically

Description: This course is designed for the beginning academic writer. What makes good academic writing good? How do I “fix” my own academic writing? How do I help others “fix” theirs? These are the questions around which this course is structured. Students will be introduced to six-trait writing, trait by trait. Each student will finish this course with one processed essay — from brainstorm to thesis, to draft and revision.
*Priority will be given to students for whom conditional acceptance to Springs requires completion of this course.
Exploring Black and White Photography
Instructor: Michael Sheehan, ISS Photography Teacher

Recommended Grades: Rising 5-12
Tuition: $500.00
This class will include taking images with a 35mm SLR analog (film) camera, hand-processing the film, culling the work, and custom printing the photographs in a darkroom. Items covered in the class will be discussions involving composition, concepts of lighting and situational photographic techniques, all of which can be applied in the digital realm. The only requirement for the class is for the student to bring a 35mm SLR analog camera with manual capabilities. If the student is unable to make this happen, the instructor will come up with one.
Mastering the SAT / PSAT (Session 2)
