ISS Senior Named Presidential Scholar Candidate

Congratulations to ISS senior Tristan Trechsel ’15, who has been named a candidate for the 2015 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program!

Founded in 1964 by executive order of the President, the program seeks to recognize graduating seniors on the basis of outstanding scholarship and exceptional SAT and ACT scores. Trechsel, who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT last fall, is one of about 3,900 candidates nationwide.

A review committee will evaluate all candidates based on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and a required essay. About 560 candidates will advance to become semifinalists, and up to 141 semifinalists will be named Presidential Scholars. Scholars will be honored at a White House-sponsored ceremony in June.

Since the federal program began, more than 6,000 U.S. Presidential Scholars have been recognized. Five Indian Springs School students have received the distinction: Yookyeong Carolyn Sim ’09, Helen Eckinger ’03, Thornton Prayer ’82, Ricky Gordon ’78, and Bill Baxter ’66. ISS Latin and English teacher Douglas Ray was named a Scholar in 2004. It is considered one of the nation’s highest honors for high school seniors.
