Thirteen high school projects and nine middle school projects have qualified to advance to the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair after competing in the fourth annual Indian Springs School Science Fair.

Top winners at the high school level (9th-12th grade) are:

• 1st Place: Gavin Young ’17 – "Cryptoanalysis of Vigenère Cipher"
• 2nd Place: Ken Jiao ’18 – "Regulation of Cardiomyocyte Differentiation from Embryonic Stem Cells by Chd7"
• 3rd Place (tie): Bela Patel ’18 – "Fuel Cell Future," Adam Aldaher ’17 – “Buzzing Business"

Top winners at the middle school level (8th grade) are:

• 2nd Place: Swapnil Patel ’19 – "Germ Invasion"
• 3rd Place (tie): Sarah Niles Simmons ’19 – "The Bugs in the Lake," Kadie Jacobs ’19 – "Chromesthesis"

Sixty-seven projects competed in the ISS Science Fair on January 21. Winners were announced Monday. Open to students in all five grades and judged by faculty and parent volunteers, the school fair follows Intel International Science and Engineering Fair guidelines and allows students to compete in all nine categories at each level.

Three entries per category are allowed to advance to the regional fair, which will be hosted by the UAB Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD) on March 7 at the UAB Recreation Center. First- through third-place winners at the regional fair will advance to compete at the state fair in Huntsville, and the top four senior (high school) division winners at the regional fair will advance automatically to the Intel International Fair in Pittsburgh.

“Our goal is for our students to feel comfortable doing research,” says ISS Science Department Chair Lisa Balazs. “We want them to be able to design their own experiments, conduct them, and then think about what they could have done to make them better. I’m proud of the tremendous effort that our students put into their work.”

Congratulations to these top winners, and best of luck at the regional fair!
