BMA Chief Curator Speaks on the Experience of Art

Indian Springs School was delighted to welcome Graham C. Boettcher, Ph.D., Chief Curator and William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, as opening guest speaker for the school's 2014-15 theme, “Art Fuels: Illuminating Connections with the Visual Arts.”

Captivating an assembly of students, faculty, guest artists, and other friends of ISS with stories of knockoff paintings and sculptures created as imitations but viewed more as “old friends,” Boettcher challenged listeners to think about how we experience art.

“Your experience of a work of art does not have to hinge on authenticity or monetary value,” he said. “Whether it is a Remington [sculpture] at the Birmingham Museum of Art or something you find at a flea market, art is everywhere. Art is where you find it, and at the end of the day, beauty is all you need to know.”

Throughout the school year, more than 30 talented artists, including several ISS alumni and parents, will continue the "Art Fuels" conversation by speaking with ISS students about the artistic process and the important role of the visual arts.

Thank you for being with us, Dr. Boettcher!
