| There's No One Like You
Having only recently arrived on campus as Indian Springs Director, it may seem somewhat presumptuous of me to categorize and to extol the school's special character and virtues: however, having spent 41 stimulating years at other leading independent schools (5 as a student, 5 as a faculty member, and 31 as a headmaster of schools in New England, Europe, and California), it immediately became obvious to me that Indian Springs is an especially distinguished and creative place which truly values educational excellence, and genuinely respects, stimulates and nurtures the uniqueness of the individual student.
While many American and international educators constantly struggle to create ever-more complex "formulas" in their elusive quest for educational success, Indian Springs long ago discovered that the most effective educational "formula" is relatively simple and straightforward,:
--- Gather an extremely capable faculty, men and women who are highly professional and absolutely dedicated to the academic, cultural and character development of youth, and who view their responsibilities as a noble calling, not as a "job".
--- Select a student body who are: capable; motivated by a rich variety of opportunities (academic, cultural, athletic, extra-curricular); and diverse both in their backgrounds and in their interests and talents.
--- Place these teachers and students in small classes, on a bucolic campus that boasts not only a rich curriculum but also countless non-academic opportunities, and let things happen! What happens is that faculty and students stimulate and stretch each other inside and outside the classroom, and warm and mutually respectful relationships between adult and youth flourish.
These characteristics, in addition to Indian Springs' honored tradition of respect for responsible student opinion and substantive student involvement in decision-making, are what create the educational "magic" at Indian Springs School.
Come to visit us; you will be warmly welcomed and the exceptional degree of excellence, creativity, and excitement on campus will be as immediately obvious to you as it is to me.
