Indian
Springs School has a 350-acre campus in a valley
surrounded by the most southwestern hills of the Appalachian
Mountains. Among the hickory, oak, maple, and sweetgum
trees that reflect the changing seasons, there are trails
for hiking, biking and cross-country running. The spring-fed
lake provides for canoeing and swimming and sunning
on the sandy beach. Sharing our southern boundary is
Oak Mountain State Park, with thousands of wooded acres
and rock faces for climbing.
To
take advantage of the climate and the campus, there
are few halls. Dorm rooms and classrooms open directly
to the outdoors, connected by breezeways. Students speak
of ours as "an outdoor campus." With everything on the
ground floor, there are no barriers for handicapped
students.
Yet
this pastoral setting is only 15 minutes by Interstate
65 from Birmingham, Alabama. The international airport
is a 30-minute drive. Atlanta is a two-and-a-half-hour
drive to the east.
